Friend or foe – how do consumers perceive smart homes?

The hype is real! Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) devices are gaining significant traction and people are increasingly interested in the concept of a smart home.

By 2020, it is expected that about 30% of global households will be connected. Next to classic smart TVs and gaming consoles, more traditional pieces of appliances and furniture are now also available in a 'smart' version. Locks, lamps, and thermostats, for instance, are starting to leverage data in order to automatically adapt to users' personal preferences.

Determined to find out more about the impact of increased connectivity throughout users' homes, we investigated the overall consumer sentiment towards smart homes and the potential of smart home vulnerabilities.

Key takeaways

The survey results were both went against and confirmed our initial assumptions. One of the our key findings was that the concept of a ‘smart home’ is generally very well known among survey participants and that most consumers agree on the positive impact smart home appliances could have on their lives. Additionally, consumers are highly aware of information security threats and consider this a very important issue. The fear of smart devices lacking proper security keeps consumers from purchasing these devices.
