Exploring IoT in Manufacturing with IxD students from EAA

Back in May 2017, my friend Amid Moradganjeh called and asked me whether wattx would be interested in collaborating with the newly established interaction design program in Tallinn, Estonia, which he is currently leading, which I said yes to. So at the beginning of October, I was already on my way to Tallinn to meet the students, explain our mission and processes at wattx, and align on the course and goals for the project.

Why do we value such collaborations?

Here at wattx we strongly believe in the power of creative minds, teamwork, as well as collaboration with our industry partners. This is the reason we initiated a cooperation with the MA students in Interaction Design of Estonian Academy of Arts, located in Tallinn. The goal of this project is to explore the field of the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) from a design point of view.

We highly value such collaborations, as they contribute to our internal idea box, helping us shape stronger concepts and improve our content. We aim at getting inspired by the creativity of the students and hope to be able to use their ideas in our process of building new products and services in the future.

The Brief

The goal of this project is to identify problem areas and opportunities in manufacturing, and later prototype correspondent solutions that address those problematics using IoT-technology.

Why is this topic of any importance?

In Estonia, manufacturing is the main field of economic activity, providing 15.8% of the GDP. The same applies to Germany and many other European countries. Hence, there is a huge market potential in improving current industrial processes and designing future experiences that match user needs, which is also the reason why wattx wants to explore this whole sector of the economy.

Throughout the 6-week-long project, the IxD students will conduct desktop research, go out in the field and speak with relevant stakeholders, and spend time understanding the way the industry works at the moment, its internal processes, as well as existing bottlenecks. Furthermore, the students will learn how to apply the human-centered design that targets industry-related processes, and understand people's psychology behind it; conduct user interviews and testing to grasp the underlying problematics and potential derived design principles; expand opportunities for identified users that need improvement; learn about existing manufacturing technologies, their limitations, and opportunities; and envision how the future of manufacturing might look like.

The IxD studio program aims at working on real projects together with industry partners, ongoing involvement with the design community, industry professionals and the general public.
